Bio:

J.D. (Jim) Keene was born in Crown Point, Indiana, and lived there until he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of seventeen.

Keene was stationed aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CV-43). The carrier's frequent visits to European ports sparked his deep fascination with the continent's rich history. His experiences heavily influence the settings in his Nino series, which include locations like Naples, Sicily, Rome, and Istanbul.

Keene's debut novel, The Heroes of Sainte-Mère-Église, was born out of necessity. Preparing for a trip to Normandy, France, he sought a fictional narrative that captured the perspective of French citizens before the D-Day invasion but found none. Determined to fill this gap, he wrote the story with the initial belief that he would be its sole reader. Although he began drafting before visiting Normandy, the village of Sainte-Mère-Église sparked his imagination and guided the narrative.

Keene values emotion as the cornerstone of any compelling story. His fast-paced and vivid writing style is informed by a unique technique he calls his "imaginary movie theater." When facing writer’s block, Keene envisions himself sitting in an empty theater, watching his story unfold on the big screen. He asks, “If this were a movie, what must happen to evoke the emotion I want the audience to feel?” With rare exception, the answer reveals itself.

Keene currently resides in Virginia, USA, with his wife, Katie, who inspired the character of Nino’s wife, Hannah.
